Panel Discussion Participants
Laura Robinson joined the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in 2004 and is currently the Program Coordinator for the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center (FLGEC), a HRSA funded GWEP, in the Division of Geriatrics & Aging in Department of Medicine. She is also a part-time doctoral student in Human Development at the Warner School.
With over thirty years’ experience in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), Ms. Robinson’s background includes direct care, staff training, program development, regulatory oversight & compliance, research, data analysis, and program evaluation. Her doctoral studies will investigate re-defining intelligence for older adults with IDD.
Phil Shippers is a Community Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association of Rochester and the Finger Lakes with a focus on the Southern Tier. Phil, having earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from St. John Fisher University has a long history of non-profit management and has worked with a variety of aging service partners across the state in his former role as President of the New York State Chapter of Meals on Wheels and through various endeavors with other non-profit and volunteer organizations. Phil and his family have experienced the challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease first-hand as caregivers for his mom and dad. Phil is a trained dementia care specialist, conducts individual and family care consultations, recruits and oversees volunteers who lead support groups, social activities, education and community outreach activities.
Except for 7 years in Connecticut, Marty Weld Maloney has lived in the Rochester area all her life. She has been married to Paul almost 50 years. Marty and Paul have 1 daughter and 2 children from Paul’s earlier life. Together, they have 5 grandchildren ranging from ages 19-11.
Marty spent most of her professional life in the Information Technology world, first as a programmer, working her way up to Vice President of a small software company. She is now retired and trying to reconcile and balance her life in ways she and Paul never imagined.
Marty keeps busy by spending time with Paul several times a week, golfing in good weather and learning a new hobby, painting. Through 2 different support groups, a team of professionals and tremendous support and encouragement from family and friends, Marty is making her way through the challenges of caregiving and advocating for Paul as well as learning how important it is to take care of herself and carry on.

WXXI and public media stations across New York State address social isolation among older adults with a new initiative, “Aging Together in New York.” Working in collaboration with the New York State Office For the Aging, WXXI and NYS public broadcasters kick off this effort with a focused week of programming starting May 15th.
“Aging Together in New York” will draw attention to the value of older adults in our communities and provide resources to help seniors build resilience and combat social isolation. Public broadcasters across the state will reach older adults on broadcast television and radio, online, and at in-person events with new documentaries, short films, and other engaging content.
