TWO SCREENINGS! | The untold story of the legendary art educator behind the beloved ’80s and ’90s shows The Secret City, Draw Squad, and Imagination Station. Mark Kistler became a well-known personality on classic PBS alongside Sesame Street, Mister Rogers, Bob Ross, and Reading Rainbow. He helped shape a pivotal era of instructional programming for children in the pre-youtube world, teaching 3D drawing before CGI. With over one-million books sold, the Emmy-award-winning host continues to inspire audiences through his incredible hand-drawn worlds and unique teaching philosophies.
Director Jason Corgan Brown and subject/legend Mark Kistler will join us virtually for a live Q&A following the January 27 screening!
Meet the Panelists
Moderator: Magnus Champlin
It wasn’t until PBS interviewed him and called him an Artist, that Magnus Champlin finally acknowledged the title. Which is only fitting since it was PBS’ Commander Mark and The Secret City that was his first art teacher. Art and the creation process is now his main focus at his design studio here in Rochester.
Mark Kistler
Over the past 40 years, Mark Kistler has taught millions of children how to draw on his Public Television Series The Secret City in the 1980’s, and The Imagination Station in the 1990’s.
He has presented over 4,000 K-12 Visual Arts School Assembly Workshops around the world, sold over 1 million books on drawing. Since 2015 Mark Kistler has been a featured guest artist at over 100 comic conventions, and been profiled in over 1,000 newspaper, magazine, and television interviews.
Mark believes that learning how to draw in 3-D builds a child’s critical thinking skills while nourishing self-esteem. His positive messages on self-image, goal setting, dream questing, environmental awareness and the power of reading have inspired millions of children to discover their awesome individual potential.
