SCREENING ON 35MM FILM | In a small Midwestern American town, a diabolical circus and its demonic proprietor Mr. Dark (Jonathan Pryce) prey on the townsfolk, granting wishes… for a price.
Infamously part of Walt Disney Pictures’ “dark” period in the early 80s, Something Wicked This Way Comes brings Ray Bradbury’s 1962 novel to the screen with a screenplay by the author himself, maintaining equal amounts of small-town Americana and childhood horror. Featuring an intoxicatingly malevolent performance by Jonathan Pryce, evocative visual effects, and an impressive (last-minute replacement) score by James Horner, Something Wicked stands as an underseen visual treat.
Perhaps more famously, the film has a legacy for terrifying any children who saw it upon its initial theatrical or video release: beyond its haunting poster, this is a “PG” Disney film that includes decapitation, blood, exotic dancers, spiders, the devil, and an overarching uneasy tone surrounding themes of death and regret. Whether you’re ready to conquer your childhood fears with a re-watch, or you’ve never seen it before — notably, Disney does not have the film available to watch on Disney+, VOD, or any streaming service, and the DVD is long out of print — join us for this rare theatrical screening of a dark-fantasy cult classic. —Matt DeTurck, Artistic Director
