Artist Statement

This collection of photographs brings together both earlier and recent work. It combines images from my two previous exhibitions, Night and Day and The British Isles, with newer photographs made around Rochester and during a cross-country trip in the 1990s. I think of these images as environmental observations: scenes encountered while walking or driving that drew my attention through light, whether natural daylight or man-made illumination.

The title, Observations, reflects the way I approach photography. These images begin with moments that visually attracted me as I traveled with a camera.

Once captured, the photographs are carefully adjusted to recreate what initially held my attention. This process includes refining color and contrast, cropping, and occasionally removing an element that distracted from my memory of the original scene. While I am comfortable subtracting visual distractions, I do not add elements that were not present.

We live in challenging times, and it is my hope that these images offer a brief pause. I invite you to step away from the present moment and enter a space of quiet contemplation, where time feels suspended and the mind is free to wander within the atmosphere of the photographs, if only for a few moments.
