“In the old days, if someone had a secret they didn’t want to share… you know what they did? They went up a mountain, found a tree, carved a hole in it, and whispered the secret into the hole. Then they covered it with mud. And leave the secret there forever.”

Taking place in Hong Kong of 1962, Wong Kar Wai’s swoon-worthy modern classic stars Maggie Cheung Man-yuk and Tony Leung Chiu-wai as neighbors who discover that their respective spouses are having an affair.

At once delicately mannered and visually extravagant, Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching musical soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping-bin, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past decade of cinema (including Daniels’ 2022 11-time Oscar nominated hit Everything Everywhere All at Once), and is a milestone in Wong’s redoubtable career.

Number five on 2022 Sight and Sound “Greatest Films of All Time List.”

The Little will be screening the 2021 restoration, via Janus Films.
