Aspiring photographer Therese (Rooney Mara) spots the beautiful, elegant Carol (Cate Blanchett) perusing the displays at a 1950s Manhattan department store. The two women develop a fast bond that becomes a love with complicated consequences.
Based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 semi-autobiographical romantic novel The Price of Salt, Todd Haynes’ Carol is an elegant, lush 1950s melodrama with tacticle period production design and a fantastic cast; a modern classic of romance and lesbian cinema.
Film Comment’s Amy Taubin wrote: “The narrative, precisely chiseled by Phyllis Nagy… seems to exist entirely in the present moment — to be precise, in that electric, elastic, heart-stopping/heart-racing present of romantic desire. It is a film composed of gestures and glances, its delicacy a veiled promise of abandon. And it could not exist without the extraordinary performances of Blanchett and Mara.”
