On April 13, 1945, a small U.S. Army reconnaissance team set out to investigate a German train stopped on the tracks near the site of their next battle. These soldiers liberated 2,500 Jewish prisoners who were being taken to a death camp. Although in combat, the U.S. Army arranged for the people to be cared for.
This story lay dormant for over fifty years until a high school history teacher interviewed one of the tank commanders who not only shared the story but photos taken at the liberation. The history teacher’s posting of the story went viral. As a result, this story is part of the largest reunification of Holocaust survivors, U.S. liberators and their families in history. There have been 11 reunions on three continents, and the story is ongoing and active today.
There are an estimated 40,000-50,000 people alive today because of the liberation of this train near Magdeburg, Germany.
An ITV Studios original documentary, produced by the Augusta Chiwy Foundation and directed by Mike Edwards, founder of The 5 Stones Group, this documentary makes use of historic photos, including one of the most powerful photos taken in the 20th century, and film footage from 1945, as well as interviews with survivors and soldiers.
A Q&A with Mike Edwards, the film director will immediately follow the screening.
