After a powerful storm damages their Maine home, David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son head into town to gather food and supplies. Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and their neighthors in the grocery store. Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within…
Frank Darabont expertly brought Stephen King’s The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile to cinema screens. Immediately before he developed The Walking Dead into a pop-cultural phenomenon, Darabont set his sights on adapting another King story for the screen: The Mist novella from 1976. Darabont always wanted to shoot the film in black and white, but mid-2000s studio mandates required it be in color. However, with the advent of DVD bonus features, Darabont was permitted to oversee an official, alternate black and white version.
Further evoking the paniced thrillers and creature features of the mid-60s, including Night of the Living Dead, the black and white version of The Mist is Darabont’s preferred version, in all its strinking, dread-filled glory. —Matt DeTurck
