In this classic story of love and devotion set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, a wounded Confederate soldier (Jude Law) deserts his unit and travels across the South, aiming to return to his young wife, Ada (Nicole Kidman), who he left behind to tend their farm. As the soldier makes his perilous journey home, Ada struggles to keep their home intact with the assistance of Ruby (Renée Zellweger), a mysterious drifter sent to help her by a kindly neighbor.
Well-crafted, with an epic sweep, and capturing the horror and brutal hardship of war, Cold Mountain was a critical and commercial success upon its release by Miramax in 2003. Written and directed by Anthony Minghella, the film received seven Academy Award nominations, including a win for Zellweger as Best Supporting Actress.
Two of its additional nominations were for Best Original Song, and the film’s soundtrack features music by Jack White of The White Stripes, Elvis Costello, and Sting, performances by Alison Krauss, production by T Bone Burnett (O Brother Where Art Thou?) and an Oscar-nominated original score by Gabriel Yared (The English Patient).
