About the Film:
The latest film by Wojtek Smarzowski, the director of “Drogówka”, “Róza” and “Wesele”, is a shocking story about addiction and attempts to overcome it – and about love, that saves everything. The script is based on Jerzy Plich’s excellent novel “The Mighty Angel” (NIKE Literary Award 2011).
Jerzy (Robert Wieckiewicz) is a writer and a heavy drinker. We meet him at the point when he believes that he can beat his addiction. He falls in love with a young girl (Julia Kijowska) and finally feels that he has got the person and the reason to live for. But soon he yields to his addiction. One day Jerzy heads to The Mighty Angel tavern, where he starts his drinking session. Then he buys more alcohol from the all-night shop and goes back to his flat to carry on drinking. Incessantly.
He lands in intensive care, and then he is directed to a several-week-long detox, where he meets doctor Granada (Andrzej Grabowski), the hospital staff (among others Robert Wabich) and other patients (Jacek Braciak, Kinga Preis, Marian Dziedziel, Marcin Dorocinski, Arkadiusz Jakubik, Lech Dyblik, Iwona Wszolkówna, Iwona Bielska, Krzysztof Kiersznowski), who create a colourful array of characters. A part of the treatment is reading previously written stories from the times when he was drinking. His stories, funny and sometimes moving will be told by: a director, a TIR lorry driver, an engineer, a pharmacist, a worker, a hairdresser and others.
“The Mighty Angel” is a story about the downfall of a man bound by his addiction in a difficult and at times tragic fight for survival. A story of despair, hope, another downfall, great determination and the light at the end of the tunnel in the form of reciprocated love to a woman, who is the last chance for the return to normal life and to escaping the degenerative disease.
