Sushi Night at The Little, Part II

By Scott Pukos

The Little Theatre and Bubble Fusion are teaming together for a glorious night of sushi, plus a bonkers movie about killer mermaids looking for love.

When: Doors open and sushi goes on sale at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17; movie starts at 7 p.m.

The Movie: The Lure … this Polish mermaid musical horror fantasy hybrid is very loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's 1837 fairy tale The Little Mermaid. It's safe to say that it is very different from the Disney cartoon film – there is no Flounder here! It’s one of the most original/completely off-the-wall films of the year, and it’s only playing in Rochester at The Little.

Where: The Little Theatre, 240 East Ave. Rochester, NY; theater 1

Tickets: General admission for THE LURE is $9; sushi sold separately

The goods: Bubble Fusion will be selling sushi and bubble tea next to our concession stands where you can also get your go-to Little favorites (including Little Popcorn). Sushi prices range from $5 to $10.

More about The Lure: In this bold, genre-defying horror-musical mash-up—the playful and confident debut of Polish director Agnieszka Smoczyńska—a pair of carnivorous mermaid sisters in an alternate 1980s Poland are drawn ashore to explore the wonders and temptations of life on land. Their tantalizing siren songs and otherworldly auras make them overnight sensations as nightclub singers in the half-glam, half-decrepit fantasy world of Smoczyńska’s imagining.

In a visceral twist on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, one sister falls for a human, and the siblings’ bond is tested as love and survival come into conflict. A savage coming-of-age fairy tale with a catchy new wave soundtrack, lavishly grimy sets, and outrageous musical numbers, The Lure explores its themes of sexuality, exploitation, and the compromises of adulthood with energy and originality.
Not rated (but with material equivalent to an R-rated film)/92 min.

** The Lure will screen at The Little throughout February. It opens Friday, Feb. 10 -- a week before Sushi Night.

** You can purchase sushi in theater 1 and purchase tickets to a different film and/or enjoy music in The Little Café.

Sushi Night history: The Little and Bubble Fusion teamed up for the original Sushi Night in April 2016 during a screening of China’s box office behemoth The Mermaid.
