Mr. Holmes comes to The Little; plus an introduction to our new PR Coordinator

One of the first things I discovered after I was hired as the Little Theatre Public Relations Coordinator, was that The Little was known as "The House of Silent Shadows" when it opened in the 1920s. I love learning new things, and I just got a kick out of this former -- and quite ominous -- name. So, feel free to use this knowledge to impress people, and know that it's now my goal to have "House of Silent Shadows" somewhere on my business cards.

Since we're future friends, I'll tell you a little about myself before I get to the upcoming movie fun.  I come from the world of journalism -- I worked for both The Daily Messenger in Canandaigua, and News 8 in Rochester. As for education, I went to college at St. John Fisher. Also, I'm a huge fan of writing, and do it as often as I can.

Additionally, much like you, I love movies. I'd even like to write a screenplay someday (it'll probably be a romantic-comedy called Tax Day, just because I already have the perfect tagline: "This April 15, the only thing they can't write off ... is love"). I wish I could say the first movie I ever saw at The Little was an obscure gem or a personal favorite, but alas, that's not the case. My first Little experience was Shutter Island - certainly a fitting film for the "House of Silent Shadows."

Now on to this week's films! Opening Friday, there's a new twist on an iconic detective (some may even say THE iconic detective). Sir Ian McKellen stars in Mr. Holmes  -- a film that takes a look at the man behind the mystery, in 1947. This date led me to Google: "What year was Sherlock Holmes born?" The answer is 1854, so this version of Sherlock is in his 90s!

Other items to note: The Wolfpack reopens July 17, and this week's MONDO movie is The Shining. So, if you see any "all work and no play" notes this week, a) that's a little frightening and b) that's just a sign that you should check out Jack Nicholson in all his deranged glory this Friday. Also, our Member Movie Night is Wednesday, July 22. If you're a member, you and a guest can enjoy a free movie. If you're not a member, now's a great time to join!

One other personal note, my birthday is July 19! A fun fact about that: I share a birthday with Benedict Cumberbatch, who of course plays (wait for it) Sherlock Holmes in the hit BBC show Sherlock. See, everything is coming full circle this week. Anyway, thanks for reading, and I'm looking forward to hearing from you! You can find this note, and more information on showtimes in our weekly newsletter. Signing up is super easy, and you can do so here.
