The Little Enters Next Phase of Historic Renovations + An Academy Award Party

The Little’s theater 1 (240 East Ave.) will enter the next phase of its historic restoration project on Monday, Feb. 25. This stage of renovations includes lobby improvements, the installation of an elevator, the addition of two green rooms, a new kitchen, and more. Theater 1 will be closed for an estimated 6 to 8 months for the restoration.

The final event in the historic venue before the next stage of improvements is an Academy Awards party Sunday, Feb. 24. Details on The Little RocOscar Party are below.

Winthrop Street Entrance remains open: The Little’s additional four theaters (located on Winthrop Street) will continue to screen independent plus foreign language films, and host popular series/festivals such as the One Take Film Festival (April 25-28), the monthly One Take Documentary series, Saturday Night Rewind, and The Black Cinema Series. Additionally, The Little Café will remain open during this time for live music with no cover charge, monthly new art exhibits, along with food and drinks.

The next phase of restorations includes:
- Modifying the theater 1 lobby by expanding into the side storefronts to improve ticket queueing, providing an improved concessions area in the east storefront.
- Repurposing the inner lobby as a lounge, repairing of building structure, rehabilitation of primary facade elements including ADA compliance and egress improvements.
- There will also be an installation of a “lula” elevator (a limited use/limited application hybrid between a commercial elevator and a lift) for access to all three floors of the building.
- The kitchen area will be renovated, two green rooms will be built, plus an ADA accessible third floor restroom will be added (The Little Business Office is on the third floor).

The historic building, which opened October 17, 1929, showed signs of increasing deterioration throughout the years. The restoration project is a vital step needed to make sure The Little continues to provide the community with films, panel discussions, live music, and more.

Background information on previous phases: Improvements over the previous seven years also include the renovation of the famous Little Marquee in June 2017. Other additions: New seats, stage, and sound system in the theater 1 auditorium added in summer 2018. Improvements over the past seven years also includes digital projection equipment in all five theaters, a refurbished 35-millimeter projector to show archival films, hearing loops, new seating, and upgraded restroom facilities. The theater 1 restoration project was designed by Rochester’s Bero Architecture.

Last night before renovations features The Little RocOscar Party:
The Little Popcorn will flow on Hollywood's biggest night. The Little is live-streaming the Academy Awards ceremony, and throwing an award-worthy party in theater 1, at 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. Doors open at 7 p.m. Party passes are $20, and include unlimited popcorn, along with unlimited water, coffee, teas, and fountain sodas. There will be a cash bar with beer and wine, as well as ballots and prizes. Party passes are on sale now at thelittle.org and at The Little box office.
