As a child, the abominable snowman terrified me.
The cold stare of his never blinking eyes, and his stop-motion rage truly was the stuff of nightmares for my younger self. But it was a type of horror I loved. I wanted that monstrous yeti to pop up and scare Rudolph, along with me. As I grew up, I realized this is part of the charm of this particular holiday classic, and one of the reasons it is something worthy of being called a classic. There's something about Christmas -- and other holiday -- movies that just gets me into a great mood.
Now, if you're looking for a new classic to add to the list, we have some options for you. Our December MONDO films explore zany and oddball offerings that will get you in the mood for eggnog (spiked with brandy).
The first one is this Friday (Dec. 4). It's the gloriously cheesy Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. If you're thinking this sounds like a perfect Mystery Science Theater film, well, the MST3K crew agreed. In fact, they absolutely crushed their episode on Santa's Martian abduction.
I'll pause for you to sing "Hooray for Santy Claus" and when you're done, check out the rest of the MONDO schedule:
Friday, Dec. 4: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
Friday, Dec. 11: Night Terrors and Santa Claws double feature ($8 for both -- first film is at 8 p.m.)
Friday, Dec. 18: Saint (Sint)
Friday, Dec. 25: Gremlins
Aside from Dec. 11, all showings are at 10 p.m. and tickets are $5.
While these are late night offerings, we have something for the kids too. On Saturday, Dec. 12 we're hosting a special holiday brunch with Sid the Science Kid. Families will enjoy dining with Sid on some super delicious food from our neighbor Orange Glory (french toast, breakfast sandwiches, fruit, pastries, coffee, yogurt, roasted potato hast and more). If you need me, I'll be the one in the corner devouring heapings of deliciousness. After your bellies are full, we'll screen Sid's Holiday Adventure. We have two times for this event: 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Click here for instructions on how to reserve your spot with Sid!
