An award-winning Rochester native will return to the Little Theatre District for a legendary jazz show in a historic theater.
Vibist Joe Locke will perform in The Little's renovated theater 1 (240 East Avenue) at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22. The concert is part of The Little's 90th anniversary celebration, and also serves as an ode to the theater's illustrious history. Locke recorded a live vinyl album at The Little, "In Front of the Silver Screen," in June 1983. The album from The Joe Locke-Phil Markowitz Quartet opens with "Restless Dreams," and includes six songs. As noted on the record's liner notes Markowitz taught Locke at The Hochstein School in Rochester.
Bio: Joe Locke is widely considered to be one of the major voices of his instrument and is known to be a soloist capable of stunning physical power and broad emotional range. He has performed and recorded with a diverse range of notable musicians, including Grover Washington Jr, Kenny Barron, Eddie Henderson, Cecil Taylor, Dianne Reeves, Ron Carter, The Beastie Boys, the Münster Symphony Orchestra and the Lincoln, Nebraska Symphony.
Locke is a six-time recipient of the Jazz Journalists Association’s “Mallet Instrumentalist of the Year” Award, has received two Earshot Golden Ear Awards for “Concert of the Year” and the 2013 Hot House NYC Jazz Awards for Best Vibes Player, and keeps topping critics and readers polls. In 2016, Locke was honored with the induction into the Music Hall of Fame of his hometown Rochester.
He describes his latest release Subtle Disguise (Origin Records, 2018) as “the total expression of who I am as a musician and human being”. The album features Jim Ridl, Lorin Cohen and Samvel Sarkisyan – all formidable musicians in their own right and hugely important to the development of this project – who will be joining Joe for this special night at The Little.
